Home Energy Grants 2022
Updated information has been received on Home Energy Grants in 2022 which we thought would be of value to share.
We have outlined the schemes below, together with what it covers and how the process works. At the end of the blog you can also download a PDF of this information and click on the seai website link for more information on how to apply. We have also included other available schemes for businesses and communities.
This year, two main schemes are available which may be of interest:
1. Better Energy Warmer Homes
2. Better Energy Homes
1. BETTER ENERGY WARMER HOMES SCHEME
This scheme is also known as the ‘Free Energy Upgrade’ and the homeowner is not charged for work done under this scheme. This scheme is aimed at those on low incomes/certain social welfare recipients and it has a wait time of up to 24 months.
To qualify:
- Own your own home & be living in it, and
- Property must have been built & occupied pre1993, and
- Have a pre-works BER of E, F or G, and
- You must not have already had work done under the scheme (this criteria may be reviewed in the future) and
- Be in receipt of one of the following Social Welfare payments:
- Fuel Allowance as part of the National Fuel Scheme
- Working Family Payment
- Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Domiciliary Care Allowance
- One Parent Family Payment
- Carer’s Allowance and you must live with the person you care for.
The scheme covers the following:
- Attic Insulation
- Wall Insulation; including cavity wall, internal wall & external wall insulation
- Draught-proofing
- Lagging Jackets
- Energy efficient lighting
- New central heating systems
- Replace windows
- Energy advice
How the process works:
Apply for the scheme
Have an SEAI surveyor check your home
Have the works carried out by an appointed SEAI contractor
Have the completed works assessed by the SEAI – obtain a BER cert
2. ONE STOP SHOP – BETTER ENERGY HOME SCHEME
Grants for Homeowners and Landlords. Approximately 50% grant funded.
Property criteria:
- Homes built and occupied before 2011 for insulation, heating controls and renewable systems
- Existing BER of B3 or lower
- Have not previously received grants for the same upgrades
The scheme covers the following:
- Attic & Floor Insulation
- Wall Insulation; including cavity wall, internal wall & external wall insulation
- Heating controls upgrade
- Solar thermal solutions
- Solar PV panels and battery systems
- Heat pump systems
- BER certificate after the works are carried out
The homeowner / Landlord pays the balance – Finance options available through Finance partners
- Suitable for multiple energy upgrades
- Grants vary depending on property type – lowest being apartments, highest being detached houses
- Want to obtain a minimum B2 BER rating on the home
- Fully managed

Supports for energy efficiency community projects through capital funding, partnerships & technical support
Open for applications December to February every year
Businesses, communities & residents who want to have a cross-sectoral partnership approach to saving energy - Electric Vehicles Grant (Commercial)
Financial support for electric N1 category commercial vehicles - Energy Efficiency Obligation Scheme
Various measures including financial for energy saving measures - Excellence in Energy Efficient Design (EXEED)
Grant support for businesses designing a large, ambitious energy investment project - Project Assistance Grant
Grants towards feasibility studies, energy audits, project delivery
Aimed at organisations spending at lest €250k per year on energy who require support to achieve energy savings - Support Scheme for Anergy Audits
Financial support (voucher) for SMEs interested in getting an energy audit Support Scheme for Renewable Heat Financial supports (grants or operational tariff) for installation of heat pumps, biomass / biogas boilers and CHP units
Businesses with high heating costs looking to switch to renewable heating options
